Safeguarding the environment

Following two years of the COVID-19 pandemic as a disruptive force in the world, embracing good environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices is increasingly critical to future-proof companies. Honing in on this, environmental sustainability is vital to support the health of the planet and livelihoods of communities, while subsequently ensuring that the world’s precious natural resources are preserved for future generations. As such, we remain steadfast in our commitment to minimise our environmental footprint and contributing to a greener future ahead.

Material Sustainability Matters

Sustainable water usage
Ultrafiltration system for freshwater filtration
Optimising water consumption
Real-time monitoring system to maintain optimal water usage throughout our production facilities
Responsible wastewater treatment
To date, invested approximately RM90 million into our cutting-edge wastewater treatment plant
Highest standard for effluent discharge
Retained the highest Standard A going beyond compliance for effluent discharge.
Advancing commitment to water stewardship
Established a reduction target of 5% for water consumption intensity by FY2024, with FY2021 as baseline.
Commitment to environmental best practices
Successfully retained ISO 14001:2015 certification our environmental management system.
Monitoring of our operations
Environmental monitoring audits are conducted on a regular basis by both internal and external parties.
Minimising waste to landfill
  • Waste management programme aligned with ISO 14001:2015 standards
  • Systematic monitoring, operational and resource efficiency in production plants and offices
  • Promote awareness on Reduce, Reuse and Recycle (3R) Implemented 3R programmes throughout our operations
  • Organised various training sessions for Hartanians to educate them on key topics such as the identification of waste generation at source and standard operating procedures for waste management.
Renewable Energy Usage
Installed a solar power system at our NGC facility and expansion plan of solar power project to other facilities.
Promote energy efficiency
Installed energy-efficiency boosting technologies
Utilise alternative energy sources
Commissioned two cogeneration power plants at the NGC.

Our Key Achievements

An initial investment of RM90 million was made into our wastewater system, with an additional RM48 million recently invested to further its enhancement.
Maintained the highest Standard A for effluent discharge, going beyond the Standard B benchmark set by the DOE.
1st in the industry to have installed biomass energy plant which uses empty oil palm fruit bunches as biomass fuel to generate heat for production processes.
Our biomass energy plant was also the 1st in Malaysia to be registered with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) or Kyoto Protocol.
Invested a total of RM127 million to transition to greener energy and reduce our dependence on fossil fuel-based sources.
Housed 2 cogeneration power plants at our facilities.
Reduction target of 25% carbon emissions intensity by FY2026 (using FY2023 as baseline).
ISO 14001:2015 certified for our environmental management system.
A key component of our renewable energy initiative is the 1.65 MW solar photovoltaic system at our NGC facility. With an installed capacity of 2,357 kWp, this rooftop solar system generated 2,980 MWh of clean electricity in FY2024, a 15% increase from the previous year.
65% of waste generated was diverted from landfills for recycling.
Upheld track record of zero incidents of environmental non-compliance.
Conducted Critically reviewed Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for key products.
